An article on the continuing importance of wound care management in the Covid-19 environment by Harriett B. Loehne, DPT, CWS
With the COVID-19 pandemic requiring many wound management clinicians in wound centers to be transferred to in-house hospital areas to help manage the acutely ill victims of the novel coronavirus, our patients with wounds have had their care altered. With the Alliance of Wound Care Stakeholders publishing a statement that wound management is an essential medical specialty, hopefully the wound specialists are getting back to more “normal” treatment and management.
The majority of patients with wounds, with many in the “elderly” age group, are exactly those considered at high risk for morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. Co-morbidities quite often include the risk factors of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, respiratory problems, and immunosuppression, with high risks of infection. We need to continue to treat these patients for wound management to help avoid trips to the Emergency Departments and/or their having to be hospitalized, not only not to take up space and staff time from the victims of COVID-19, but also to avoid increased risk of the virus. This is especially true for those in long term care facilities.
It is important to conserve as many resources as we can for those patients in ICUs, and one way for wound clinicians to do so is to use a single unit dose instead of large bottles of Normal Saline (NS) for irrigating non-complex wounds, as well as moistening dressings for removal. Tiny respiratory vials of NS are not efficacious or intended for wounds. There is a single use unit dose product in a recyclable polymer vial, Saljet®, that contains 30 ml of sterile NS. It is not considered a pharmaceutical, and therefore does not have to be kept under lock and key. Because it is single use and cannot be recapped, waste is eliminated, and patient safety is assured with no cross contamination.
Whether persons with wounds are treated in a wound center, a facility, or at home via telemedicine or home health visits, their wound management must continue to avoid increased risk of complications of COVID-19 in this most vulnerable population.

Phew what a scorcher!

The hottest day coincided with Royal Ascot, a horse racing event attended by the Queen who is a keen horse woman.
Phew what a scorcher!
Britain saw the hottest June day since 1976 with temperatures reaching into the 90s. Most Brits have no air conditioning in their homes and not all stores are cooled either so lots of Brits go to the supermarkets to stand in the frozen food section!
The hottest day coincided with Royal Ascot, a horse racing event attended by the Queen who is a keen horse woman. In the Royal Enclosure men are required to wear top hats and tails and for them first time ever, men were allowed to remove their jackets! On the 1st of June 2017 The Beatles 1967 LP, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band celebrated it's 50th anniversary.
On the 1st of June 2017 The Beatles 1967 LP, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band celebrated it's 50th anniversary. Howard and I were fortunate enough to have an invitation to see The Bootleg Beatles, www.bootlegbeatles.com, perform the LP with the aid of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
What an extraordinary night! The Bootlegs and the Liverpool Philharmonic were brilliant, recreating the original LP, which the Beatles never performed live, and making it their own. The Beatles were a group for ten years whilst the Bootleg Beatles are now in their 37th year performing all over the world!
The audience of course knew all the words and needed no encouragement to sing along although I think we were all wondering how the last fifty years have sped by so quickly! The concert finished with a splendid rendition of All You Need is Love and in the end that is all we need but sometimes we forget.
McKesson and Las Vegas

Talking with the President of McKesson, Stanton McComb
Last week saw us in Las Vegas for the McKesson sales conference. As Brits we really struggled with the 100 degree dry heat, I don't think I've sneezed so much in one week before without having a cold!
McKesson is the biggest distributor of medical products in the USA and we had the pleasure of talking with the president of the Medical Surgical Division, Stanton McComb, who posed with us for a photo at our booth! Rock on Stanton! We also talked to lots of the McKesson sales people who are so positive about Saljet, it was good to meet old friends and make new ones.
We were in Vegas for the Memorial Day holiday weekend and noticed that the pool party seems to be a major activity in the town. The hotels and other venues compete for customers by having 'cool' DJs and great cocktails poolside and this results in lots of very scantily clad women and men wandering about in the hotels looking for the pool venues, lots of flesh on view without having to go to the strip clubs!
We had the pleasure of eating at the Hakkasan restaurant, a wonderful modern Cantonese restaurant, the duck salad is to die for, wonderful flavors. There are 13 Hakkasan restaurants around the world with 4 of them in the USA, www.hakkasangroup.com for locations.
Next stop The Royal Albert Hall in London to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles' LP, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, with a concert starring The Bootleg Beatles.

We have just attended WOCN in Salt Lake City
We have just attended WOCN in Salt Lake City, always a pleasure to meet up with old friends and new at this conference. Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and other followers of the Mormon religion. There are some interesting buildings to visit which date back to the founding of the city and since our visit some years ago there has been a huge modernization of the city center.
We struggled with the altitude, 4226 feet, making breathing much more difficult especially when walking briskly to the convention center! It was interesting seeing snow on the mountains in May as the city sits in a bowl created by the surrounding Wasatch and Oquirrh mountain ranges.
We had a lovely meal in the Bambara restaurant which is in The Monaco Hotel,
www.monaco-saltlakecity.com. I got a gold star from fellow trade show vendors for having an umbrella with me on Sunday when it rained quite hard all day and I had to explain it was my British upbringing which means never leaving home without an umbrella!
